The Theme Parties That Inspired an Orgy - NYTimes.com

In the comedy ?A Good Old Fashioned Orgy,? Jason Sudeikis stars as a man who throws elaborate theme parties at the Long Island family home where he spends his summers. When he gets the news that his father is selling the house, he decides to throw the ultimate party for which the film is named.

The theme parties that factor into the film?s plot, including the White Trash party pictured above, were inspired by creative bashes thrown by Peter Huyck, who co-wrote and co-directed the film with Alex Gregory.

?In New York or L.A., there are a lot of great, but similar, parties, and I always wanted to find a way to do things that were a little different,? Mr. Huyck said.

?A lot of what the movie deals with is a guy who loves to throw these parties realizing that this is the end of an era,? Mr. Gregory added. ?Because he?s losing this house, he feels this internal pressure to outdo himself, which is exactly what would happen if Pete were told he had one last party to throw.?

Mr. Huyck shared some snapshots and tales from the actual Southern California parties he has organized over the years, and it?s easy to see how they just might inspire a film.

Trekkies
?We would take a group of people on buses to the Santa Anita racetrack. Initially we would just go for Derby Day. We would dress as if it were the Kentucky Derby, with gentlemen in seersucker and old-timey hats and bowties, and ladies in giant hats and sundresses. Eventually we started exploring the theme to more preposterous lengths. In 2005, we took everyone in Star Trek costumes as if we were all Trekkies who had beamed back in time in our mind. That infuriated most of the people at the Santa Anita racetrack.?

Pirateertown
?We took over an Old West town, known as Pioneertown, where my grandparents used to run a popcorn stand. We went out there for my birthday with about 75 folks. But we all dressed as pirates, as if we had gotten the theme of the town wrong and thought it was Pirateertown.?

Jailbreak
?Another trip to Santa Anita Derby was known as the jailbreak year. The story is I was dressed as a warden and I brought about a hundred folks dressed in jumpsuits. For good behavior, I promised all of the inmates a trip to the racetrack for a day. For some reason, I shaved my head into the double ring of fire for that event. It was just two rings of hair that interlinked around my face and the rest was shaved clean.?

Terry
?Terry is an annual event. It is a fictitious cult. Everyone has to wear all-white and everyone gets a smiley face medallion. And everyone is called Terry for the day. We go to these vineyards and, at first, people are delighted that there?s 100 people all in white. And the debauchery begins and eventually people are skinny-dipping in the lake. We were run out of town by the police. All of the vineyards in Santa Barbara then established a law that they would not take large groups anymore.?
