SAN FRANCISCO ? Orlando Hudson had trouble accepting the fact that he did everything in his power to save San Diego from another disappointing loss.
The second baseman extended himself as far as he could but was only able to slow down Mark DeRosa's game-ending single Tuesday night. The ball hit the top of Hudson's glove and trickled onto the outfield grass in the 12th inning, giving the San Francisco Giants a 3-2 victory over the Padres.
"That's the way it's been going, man," Hudson said. "Tough game. We battled but came up short. You saw what happened to me. I didn't come up with it."
Hudson, who ended a career-long 0-for-34 streak on Monday night, finished 1 for 4. He stranded one runner in scoring position and was left at third after getting there with no outs in the fifth.
He wasn't the only frustrated San Diego player. Jason Bartlett's two-run double was the only hit the Padres had in 12 opportunities with runners in scoring position.
San Diego has lost five of six.
"We had other chances along the way and we couldn't get the big hit," manager Bud Black said. "It's something we've talked about all year."
Pablo Sandoval and Justin Christian each drove in a run for the Giants, who have won three straight. Ramon Ramirez (3-3) pitched a scoreless inning to get the win.
"We've been playing relaxed all year," San Francisco starter Matt Cain said. "We weren't able to find wins at times but we're going to keep playing."
DeRosa's two-out single off Brad Bauch (0-2) just evaded Hudson, allowing Cody Ross to score the winning run from third.
"A line-drive leap and just off the top of the glove," Black said. "Probably as close as you can get."
Ross opened the inning with a leadoff single. He moved to second on a wild pitch and Carlos Beltran was intentionally walked. Sandoval bounced into a fielder's choice before DeRosa recorded his fifth career game-ending hit and first in four years.
Cory Luebke struck out eight in six innings for the Padres, yielding two runs and 10 hits. The left-hander is 0-3 with a 4.28 ERA in his last five starts.
"I didn't make it easy," Luebke said. "I was glad we were able to get out of a jam here and there. It was a good learning experience."
The Padres broke through against Cain and two relievers in the seventh. Cain walked James Darnell with one out and was replaced by Javier Lopez, who got pinch-hitter Andy Parrino on a groundout but gave up a double to pinch-hitter Aaron Cunningham.
Guillermo Mota took over for Lopez, and Bartlett drilled his first offering to the wall in left-center, tying it at 2.
