US: Taiwanese expect continuation of China policy (AP)

TAIPEI, Taiwan ? A U.S. official says Taiwan's current policy of seeking reconciliation with China is what Taiwanese expect from their leaders.

Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell made the comment in Washington on Tuesday, several months before Taiwanese presidential elections in which voters will choose between President Ma Ying-jeou and opposition candidate Tsai Ing-wen.

Tsai has criticized Ma's policy of deepening economic relations with Beijing as potentially undermining Taiwan's de facto independence.

China continues to claim the island as its territory 62 years after they split amid civil war.

The State Department pledged neutrality in the elections last month after an official was quoted as saying Tsai's China approach threatened regional peace.
