Menlo Innovations Shows A New Kind Of Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- When Rich Sheridan lost his job in the dot-com bubble about a decade ago and decided to start his own company, he had some trouble explaining the idea to his wife.

"I came home and told Carol I had lost my job and she went, 'So you're unemployed,'" he said. "And I said, 'No, I'm an entrepreneur now.'"

Even after weeks of working in his basement with friends on the business plan, when it came time to invest some $15,000 of the family's money in the nascent firm, Carol was confused.

"I was just thinking, what business?" she recalled, adding that she thought her husband and his friends had been applying for jobs together in the basement.

What they had been plotting instead was Menlo Innovations, a software-design outfit that now has 42 employees and that Sheridan and his partners expect will bring in about $5 million in revenue this year. And they weren't alone. While Michigan's economy is distressed overall, the emergence of countless small technology start-ups here in recent years gives some hope that there are better days ahead.

But even as a report issued this month showed that, for all the state's challenges, Michigan gained more tech jobs than any other state in 2010, there is still some lingering uncertainty about a brand of business that is much different from automobile manufacturing. Take Carol Sheridan's father, for one. He worked for Chrysler for 10 years and was later a tool and die maker for an auto parts manufacturer. When Rich Sheridan wanted to start Menlo, his father-in-law "looked at him funny," as James Goebel, another of the founders, remembered.

The state as a whole has had to wrap its mind around these new kinds of companies, which are among the fastest growing in Michigan. Even as GDP growth struggles here, the high concentrations of students and engineers have made it an attractive place to start new companies. Many of these have been founded by graduates of the University of Michigan, which recently announced that it would begin investing in companies that begin on its campus.

Still, Goebel said that Michigan investors in general are more risk-averse than venture capitalists in other states.

"People here only want to start the next HP or Apple," he said. "But you have to start 10,000 firms to end up with HP and Apple. It's a new idea here that you would start companies knowing so many would fail."

Menlo certainly hasn't failed, and nobody is looking at its founders with anything except admiration anymore. The company has been named a "Michigan Economic Bright Spot" and one of the fastest-growing private companies in America. Software they developed for a cytometer manufacturer helps count cells in fluid and has been one of the firm's biggest successes.

Now they're ready to branch out into even riskier territory. Nontraditional business arrangements, such as deferring design fees in exchange for an equity stake or royalties in the final product, have always been central to what Menlo does, and was central to getting the firm off its feet in its earliest days. Now the founders are considering making this kind of "leveraged play" almost their entire business.

"It's a completely new model," as Goebel put it, "and that's true for us and also for the state in general."

Rapper Rick Ross reportedly hospitalized 2nd time (AP)

MIAMI ? Rapper Rick Ross was reportedly hospitalized in Alabama on Friday night after suffering a medical incident about a Memphis, Tenn.-board plane, the second time in six hours that a plane carrying the performer had to be diverted because of concerns about his health.

Ross was scheduled to appear at a University of Memphis basketball event on Friday night, and had even tweeted "Memphis here I come" after a medical scare hours earlier had prompted a Delta Air Lines plane to return to Florida so that Ross could be taken to the hospital.

But the 34-year-old Ross never made his scheduled appearance at an event called "Memphis Madness" on Friday night.

Memphis coach Josh Pastner told the crowd on Friday evening that a private jet carrying Ross made an unscheduled landing in Birmingham after the singer had another medical problem.

"On his way to Memphis," Pastner said, "he had to make another emergency landing, in Birmingham. He got really sick again, and they had to rush him to the emergency room."

Birmingham airport spokeswoman Toni Bast confirmed that a private plane traveling from Fort Lauderdale to Memphis made an unscheduled landing in Birmingham at around 5:30 p.m. because of a medical emergency, but she could not provide any further details.

WMC-TV in Memphis reported that Ross suffered a second medical seizure and had been hospitalized. His condition was not immediately known late Friday night.

Calls to his publicist from The Associated Press were not returned Friday.

Ross was scheduled to perform Friday night at the University of Memphis basketball team's midnight opening practice event.

At about 1 p.m. Friday, Ross was on a Delta Air Lines flight from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., to Memphis when he suffered an unspecified medical problem. The flight, carrying 121 passengers, returned to Fort Lauderdale.

Mike Jachles, a spokesman for Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue, said the flight landed at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and was met by paramedics. They performed what Jachles called "advanced life-support care," though it did not include CPR.

Jachles could not specify what exact care Ross was given, but he said the performer was stable, breathing, conscious and alert.

Ross was in a seat when paramedics reached him and he walked off the plane, Jachles said. He was taken to a terminal area where he was evaluated before being transported to a Fort Lauderdale hospital to be checked out.

Jachles said there was a doctor on the plane who had tried to assist Ross, though he could not say what, if anything, the doctor did.

"Nobody told us, either when we were advised, dispatched or on the scene, no mention was made of CPR being initiated or in progress," Jachles said.

Soon after going to the hospital, Ross contacted Memphis to tell them he was still coming.

"He called a member of our staff and said not to believe what's out there and that he's on his way to perform at Memphis Madness," Lamar Chance, a university athletics department spokesman, said Friday afternoon.

"He called us," Pastner explained Friday evening. "We talked to him after the doctors cleared him. He said it was the altitude."

Pastner said that Ross was able to hop a private jet and was on his way a second time.

A video on his Twitter page Friday night showed him talking from an airplane seat and promising to appear as scheduled in Memphis.

The Miami-based gangsta rapper gained fame with his husky voice and lyrics that spotlighted the grimier side of Miami life. He has become one of rap's most popular figures in recent years.

Ross, whose real name is William Leonard Roberts II, has a new album titled "God Forgives, I Don't," due out in December.

The hefty rapper's hits include "Aston Martin Music," "B.M.F. (Blowing Money Fast)" and "Hustlin'."

Zuccotti Park to be cleaned up and Wall Street protesters cleared out

Zuccotti Park has been occupied by Wall Street protesters for the last four weeks, but in a sudden turn of events they will have to vacate the park tomorrow morning and will not be allowed to return with their sleeping bags, tarps, tables, or other gear.

Protests against corporate greed and corruption are spreading across the United States into Canada and the United Kingdom, just as the New York demonstration that started the movement faces a crackdown by its unwilling landlord.

The owner of the private park where "Occupy Wall Street" protesters have been camped out for nearly a month in lower Manhattan gave notice Thursday that it will begin enforcing regulations that prohibit everything from lying down on benches to storing personal property on the ground.

New York Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly said that protesters can remain in the park after the cleaning but will not be able to use the gear that has allowed them to sleep, eat and live in the park.

"After it's cleaned, they'll be able to come back, but they won't be able to bring back the gear, the equipment, sleeping bags," Kelly said. "That sort of thing will not be able to be brought back into the park."

The landlord, Brookfield Office Properties, handed out a notice to protesters saying they would be allowed back inside after a planned park cleanup on Friday morning if they abide by park regulations.

The notice said the the 12-hour, section-by-section cleaning is slated to begin 7 a.m. Friday (1100 GMT) and is part of daily upkeep, and that conditions have deteriorated in recent weeks because that upkeep was put on hold by the protesters.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg visited the protesters Wednesday to offer assurances they would not be evicted. Bloomberg's girlfriend, Diana Taylor, is on Brookfield's board of directors, according to the property owner's website.

Protesters said they believe the effort is an attempt to end their encampment at Zuccotti Park, a three-quarter acre (one-third hectare) open square near the New York Stock Exchange, which triggered a movement against unequal distribution of wealth that has spread across the globe.

"They're going to use the cleanup to get us out of here!" said Justin Wedes, 25, a part-time public high school science teacher from Brooklyn. "It's a de facto eviction notice."

There was a scramble of activity Thursday afternoon as demonstrators began cleaning the park themselves. Part of the plaza was blocked off with red tape. Within that area, protesters scrubbed benches and mopped stone flooring. Some people even replanted flower beds.

Protester Dylan O'Keefe, an unemployed 19-year-old from Northampton, Massachusetts, was tying red tape marked with the word "danger" around trees.
