Permanently dismal economy could prompt men to seek more sex partners

ScienceDaily (Oct. 13, 2011) ? Grim economic times could cause men to seek more sexual partners, giving them more chances to reproduce, according to research by Omri Gillath, a social psychology professor at the University of Kansas.

Men are likely to pursue short-term mating strategies when faced with a threatening environment, according to sexual selection theory based on evolutionary psychology.

When made to think about their own death, which mimics conditions of "low survivability," Gillath and his colleagues found that men responded more vigorously to sexual pictures and had increased heart rates when viewing them, compared to when they thought about dental pain.

"We're biologically wired to reproduce, and the environment tells us the best strategy to use to make sure our genes are passed on," said Gillath. "If you think you might die soon, there's a huge advantage for a man to use short-term mating strategies -- to make sure there are a bunch of offspring and hope that some of them survive -- but women can't do the same thing."

"The ultimate sign of low chances of surviving is death," Gillath added. "After threatening them with their own death, we asked them to look at a computer with sexual and nonsexual images, to see if death makes men more interested in sex."

People primed with death triggered a lever faster when they saw sexual images, compared to those primed with dental pain. The two groups exhibited no difference in response times for nonsexual images.

"In low survivability conditions, we think that men would be more apt to pursue sex outside of a monogamous relationship, looking for ways to spread their genes," Gillath said.

The KU research is the first to show a causal link between low survivability cues and sexual preparedness in men, using both behavioral and physiological measures. Previously, other researchers have depended on demographics to support "life history theory," for instance by looking at the fact that richer countries tend to show lower birthrates, or that the age of first sex encounters is lower in poorer neighborhoods.

"When the environment is secure and you have enough food and things are working the way you would like them to, people are more likely to invest in their existing kids and stay with their current partner or prefer long-term mating strategies," said Gillath. "But if the environment is dangerous and your chances of survival are low -- if there is a famine or more enemies -- then people will adopt short-term strategies which allow them to reproduce more."

Gillath connected his research to fears surrounding the current economy. Some analysts predict that today's economic doldrums could herald a lasting era of high unemployment, low expectations and a diminished standard of living.

Could such an enduringly terrible economy prompt men to stray away from their long-term committed relationships and follow a more promiscuous lifestyle?

Gillath thinks that's possible.

"The economy today is giving us signs that we have lower chances of survival," said the KU researcher. "There's not as much money, we're not sure if we're going to have our jobs, we're not sure we can support our existing kids. It's like living on the savannah and discovering you don't have enough fruit and the animals are scarce. In such times, guys might be more inclined to spread their genes and hence be highly prepared for sex."

The results will be published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology this November.

Romney: Work with 'good' Democrats to fix economy (AP)

HANOVER, N.H. ? Republican presidential contender Mitt Romney says he would work with "good" Democrats to lead the country out of economic crisis.

Romney is a former governor of deeply Democratic Massachusetts. He opened Monday night's debate of eight Republican contenders pledging to work across the political parties to find solutions. He says that's what he did as governor and what he would do if he wins the White House.

Romney is pointing to his 59-point economic plan as a roadmap. He says his detailed plans should attract interest from voters of both parties.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry says he will offer his own economic plan in the coming days. He says Romney has been running for president for six years, while Perry has been in the race only for a few weeks.

Film Shows Epidemic of Cancer Downstream from Koch Industries ...

A provocative new video from Brave New Films exposes what appear to be serious environmental crimes in Crossett, Arkansas, caused by waste product at a Georgia-Pacific plant. Georgia-Pacific is owned by Koch Industries.

In the video, the citizens of Penn Road, a residential neighborhood behind a channel into which the Georgia-Pacific plywood, paper mill, and formaldehyde resin plants are dumping their wastewater, are seen suffering from the effects of poor air quality and carcinogens in their environment. David Bouie, a pastor at the local church for 22 years in the area, says in the video. ?We have 15 homes in this area, and maybe 11 people have died with cancer. Something is wrong on this street, Penn Road, where I live.?

The Georgia Pacific plant is the only large manufacturer in the city, and their plant is directly upstream from the channel behind Penn Road. ?Whatever?s in (the water) is killing these trees. You can see the steam coming from the stuff. It gets up in the air and it flows over where our property is,? says Bouie in the video.

Another participant in the video, Dolores Wimberley, a former resident of Penn Road, describes how her daughter Laetitia died at the age of 43. ?She was a non-smoker, she was not a drinker and she got lung cancer. You wonder, where did it come from??

Several of the living residents of Penn Road are seen on breathing respirators, living with severe coughing spells and nausea. The city of Crossett has one of the leading incidents of exposure to cancer-causing toxins in the nation.

The irony here is that David Koch, one of the co-owners of Koch Industries, for which Georgia-Pacific is a subsidiary, was diagnosed with cancer several years ago, and as a result has given millions of dollars to cancer research. He even has a research institute named after him at MIT. But Koch?s company has resisted the labeling of formaldehyde as a carcinogen, and that formaldehyde is slowly killing the residents of Penn Road in Crossett. Koch Industries is one of the top ten worst polluters in the country according to a UMass-Amherst study, mainly on the strength of this use of formaldehyde.

Many examples of environmental crimes by Koch Industries were covered in the long expose by Bloomberg News. But this video, with its direct depictions of the victims of the crimes, could have more staying power.

Activists with the Occupy Wall Street movement plan to visit the homes of millionaires today, including the home of David Koch. Maybe they can watch this video as a primer.

The Louisiana Environmental Action Network assisted Brave New Films in the making of the film.

Lung Cancer Leads List of Malignancies Linked With Bankruptcy ...

Cancer often takes a heavy toll not only on people?s bodies but on their finances as well. And just as some types of cancer are more deadly than others, some types cause more financial pain, as recent research from Seattle?s Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center shows.

When researchers examined bankruptcy rates in Washington state and compared them with a registry of 232,000 cancer patients there between 1995 and 2009, they found that five years after their diagnosis cancer patients were four times more likely to declare bankruptcy than the general population.

Specifically, 1.9 percent of cancer patients declared bankruptcy compared with just 0.28 percent of those without cancer.

?

When researchers looked further, certain types of cancer were associated with a higher risk of bankruptcy at the 5-year mark than others. The top five cancers in order of risk for bankruptcy were:

  • Lung
  • Thyroid
  • Leukemia/lymphoma
  • Uterine
  • Colorectal

Although the reasons for the higher bankruptcy rates aren?t known with certainty, study lead author Scott Ramsey, a physician and health economist at Hutchinson, has some ideas.

In the case of lung and thyroid cancers, it may have to do with the populations that are typically affected, says Ramsey.

Lung cancer, for example, is generally diagnosed in smokers who are more likely to be relatively low on the socioeconomic ladder, says Ramsey. Likewise, thyroid cancer is most common in women who are younger than typical cancer patients, and so may have worse or less insurance than older patients.

In the case of leukemia/lymphoma and colorectal cancers, extremely high treatment costs may be the culprit in bankruptcy filings, he says, pointing to bone marrow transplants used to treat blood cancers, and the $300,000 or higher price tag to treat advanced colorectal cancer.

As for uterine cancer, ?We?re not quite sure what?s going on with that,? he says.
