Red meat lovers have more kidney cancer (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? People who eat lots of red meat may have a higher risk of some types of kidney cancer, suggests a large U.S. study.

Researchers found that middle-aged adults who ate the most red meat were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer than those who ate the least. A higher intake of chemicals found in grilled or barbecued meat was also linked to increased risk of the disease, they reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.

"Red meat is an important source for iron (and) it has protein," said Dr. Mohammed El-Faramawi, an epidemiologist from the University of North Texas Health Science Center in Fort Worth, who has studied diet and kidney cancer risks but wasn't involved in the new study.

"You should not stop eating red meat because there is an association between red meat and renal cancer," he told Reuters Health. Instead, eating a limited amount of meat while following dietary recommendations is a good idea, he said.

U.S. guidelines call for limiting high-fat foods including processed meat, and instead eating more lean meat and poultry, seafood and nuts.

Eating red meat in large amounts -- even if it doesn't necessarily lead to kidney cancer -- increases the risk of a host of health problems, such as plaque buildup in the arteries, El-Faramawi added.

Previous studies examining the link between red meat and kidney cancer arrived at mixed conclusions, according to Carrie Daniel, from the National Cancer Institute in Rockville, Maryland, and her colleagues.

To try to clear up that picture, they used data from a study of close to 500,000 U.S. adults age 50 and older, who were surveyed on their dietary habits, including meat consumption, and then followed for an average of nine years to track any new cancer diagnoses.

During that time, about 1,800 of them -- less than half a percent -- were diagnosed with kidney cancer.

On average, men in the study ate two or three ounces of red meat per day, compared to one or two ounces among women. Participants with the highest consumption of red meat -- about four ounces per day -- were 19 percent more likely to be diagnosed with kidney cancer than those who ate the smallest amount, less than one ounce per day.

That was after accounting for other aspects of diet and lifestyle that could have influenced cancer risks, such as age, race, fruit and vegetable consumption, smoking and drinking and other medical conditions including high blood pressure and diabetes.

When the researchers looked at the most common types of kidney cancers, they found that the association between red meat and cancer was stronger for so-called papillary cancers, but there was no effect for clear-cell kidney cancers.

People who ate the most well-done grilled and barbecued meat -- and therefore had the highest exposure to carcinogenic chemicals that come out of the cooking process -- also had an extra risk of kidney cancer compared to those who didn't cook much meat that way.

The study doesn't prove that eating red meat, or cooking it a certain way, causes kidney cancer. And, El-Faramawi pointed out, some people who eat lots of red meat won't develop cancer, while others that hardly eat any will.

Daniel and her colleagues said more research is needed to figure out why red meat may be linked to some types of kidney cancers but not others.

But for now, meat-related cooking chemicals "can be reduced by avoiding direct exposure of meat to an open flame or a hot metal surface, reducing the cooking time, and using a microwave oven to partially cook meat before exposing it to high temperatures," Daniel told Reuters Health in an email.

"Our findings," she concluded, "support the dietary recommendations for cancer prevention currently put forth by the American Cancer Society -- limit intake of red and processed meats and prepare meat by cooking methods such as baking and broiling."

i Editor's Letter: Animal love

I have never been a pet person. I only ever had a couple of budgies as a child ? both called Pip for a reason lost in the mists. I recall on the occasion of both deaths that I came downstairs to find them dead in their cages. It was traumatic, but not life-scarring.

I am mildly allergic to dogs. So I can only scratch my head in bemusement at the obsessive, parental-esque sort of behaviour they inspire in the likes of our own Simon Kelner and many i readers. It's Ma's fault. She would say, as if on a continual loop during my childhood: "The trouble with the English is that they love their pets so much more than their own children."

I grew up trying to dismiss this ? as with so many other of those Italian Ma sayings, but there was troubling evidence that suggested she might be correct in the homes of almost every friend with a pet I ever visited.

I got to thinking about this, because ? bizarrely for me ? I got emotional about animals twice yesterday, and it really pulled me up. First up, as my daughter was visiting her grandma, I fed her beautiful black cat, Minky. We don't have much one-on-one time, Minky and I, but the big green eyes, the cocked head, the nuzzling up and purring all had the desired effect: I filled her bowl with way too many dry fish pellets. I guess you are a cat person or a dog person. It's cats all the way for me. I left with a heavy heart.

The other occasion was even more bizarre, because I have a) no familial links with Kauto Star, and b) next to no interest in steeplechasing. But, we turned on the King George VI race at i because Louis wanted to watch it. We were all enthralled. The beauty, heart, power and sheer talent of the horse was very clear even to me, as his jockey Ruby Walsh nurtured him over the course of the race, and produced a focused, determined finish to hold off last year's winner Long Run. I even welled up. Again. Go figure!

Aide to top Mexican drug boss Guzman captured (Reuters)

MEXICO CITY, Dec 26 (Reuters) ? Mexico landed its third blow against the country's most wanted drug trafficker in as many months after capturing a suspected lieutenant of Joaquin "Shorty" Guzman, boss of the powerful Sinaloa cartel.

On Monday, masked Mexican soldiers presented Felipe Cabrera, known as "el Inge," to the media following his capture in Culiacan, capital of Sinaloa, the northwestern Pacific state after which the drug cartel is named.

Cabrera, whose nickname is an abbreviation of the Spanish word for engineer, was the second suspected Guzman lieutenant to be seized there in the past two months.

"These are blows to the (Sinaloa) organization, but the structure for drug trafficking and money laundering is still intact," Alberto Islas, a security expert at consultancy Risk Evaluation, said after Cabrera's media parade in Mexico City.

In what may have been another bitter pill for Guzman, the government said later that the navy had seized 21 tonnes of monomethylamine - a compound used to make methamphetamines - in the Pacific port of Manzanillo, traditionally his turf.

The shipment may have been intended for Guzman given that several others belonging to him had been seized there, one official told Reuters, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Islas said the haul, which was intercepted on its way from Peru to Guatemala - where the Sinaloa cartel is also active - was probably worth at least $50 million in unprocessed form.

CRACKDOWN

President Felipe Calderon's conservative administration has been dominated by a military crackdown on drug cartels, which has claimed over 45,000 lives in the past five years, eroding support for his National Action Party, or PAN.

The PAN has been trailing its main rival for months as Mexico gears up for a presidential election in July 2012.

The government has captured or killed dozens of top smugglers, but Guzman, the most notorious, is still at large.

Defense ministry spokesman Ricardo Trevilla hailed the arrest of Cabrera as a setback for the operational and leadership capabilities of the Sinaloa cartel, regarded as the main trafficker of drugs into the United States.

The ministry said Cabrera was in charge of the cartel's operations in Durango, a state bordering Sinaloa and a Guzman bastion where the kingpin has been rumored to live.

Guzman runs an empire of methamphetamine, marijuana and cocaine smuggling that has earned him a spot on Forbes magazine's list of billionaires.

The ministry added that Cabrera also had responsibility for the southern part of the border state of Chihuahua, through which many drugs are smuggled into the United States.

Cabrera, who allegedly headed Guzman's personal security in the Durango area, is suspected of involvement in a host of violent crimes ranging from arson to kidnapping and extortion.

He was captured on Friday as part of an operation which led to the arrest of 23 suspected operators in the Sinaloa cartel and their bitter rivals, Los Zetas.

Apple iPhone 4S to launch before January 23rd in mainland China

Earlier this month, we told you that regulators in China had finally issued the last remaining paperwork needed for the Apple iPhone 4S to be launched in the country. Now, we have word from China's People's Daily that the absolutely last step before a launch occurred when the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology granted China Compulsory Certification for the iPhone 4S on Dec. 22. The word now is that Apple will introduce the phone at the beginning of next month and will launch it before the Chinese New Year on January 23rd. The Apple iPhone 4S is expected to cost 4,999 Yuan ($786 USD) off-contract for the 16GB variant.

Filings with the Chinese regulators show that approval was granted for Apple to sell a WCDMA phone with the model number A1431. While the paper doesn't mention the Apple iPhone 4S by name, the model number is the same as the one used by the Cupertino based firm for a network entry permit for the Apple iPhone 4S. Since China hopped over the U.S. to become the world's largest smartphone market, there is a lot at stake here for Apple.

In the region, the Apple iPhone 4S has been a hot commodity, selling out in Hong Kong within minutes of being put on sale. Some regional branches of China Unicom have been taking pre-orders for weeks in advance of the regulatory approval. China Unicom is the only carrier in the country that is officially allowed to sell the iPhone although Apple has been working with the world's largest carrier, China Mobile, on offering a variant of the phone that would work on the carrier's unique TD-SCDMA network. With 600 million customers (although only 80 million currently are 3G customers), getting approval for the iPhone for China Telecom could have a positive impact on Apple's earnings.

As far as the Apple iPhone 4S is concerned, there is talk that a Mandarin speaking version of Siri will be available in March of next year. Mandarin is the most popular form of the Chinese language.

Japan, China come together for restarting talks with North Korea

BEIJING Death of North Korean leader Kim Jong II and the uncertainty about the new regime, on Sunday saw unlikely allies Japan and China reach out to each other in a bid to promote regional stability.

Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda on a visit to China met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao here Sunday to work out the plans to restart talks with North Korea aimed at persuading it to end its nuclear weapons programme.

"With the passing away of Kim Jong Il, the leader of North Korea, we are currently facing a new situation in East Asia," said Noda at a press conference after talks with the Chinese premier.

"Safeguarding the peace and stability of the Korean peninsula is in the common interest of our two countries," Noda emphasized. "On this issue, it is very timely to exchange views with the host of the six-party talks and the country with the most influence on North Korea."

The six-party talks is aimed at getting North Korea to stop its nuclear programme. In 2009, North Korea walked out of the six-party talks, which includes, the United States, Russia, China, Japan and the two Koreas. After disengaging from the talks, North Korea had exploded a second nuclear-test device.

Tension in the region escalated last year after two alleged military attacks by North Korea on South Korea.

Normally the bilateral talks would have revolved round issues of mutual concern, including territorial disputes to gain control over energy resources in the East China Sea.

But the death of North Korea's leader Kim on December 17 and the announcement of his younger son Kim Jong Un taking over as the "supreme leader" has shifted the focus to issues of greater regional concern.

Among the six-party group, China has the closest links with North Korea being its supplier of food and energy resources.

Premier Wen also underlined the need for both the countries to cooperate.

The visit of Noda, who came to power in September, was planned prior to the official announcement of Kim's death on December 19.

Noda is scheduled to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao on Monday before returning home. Earlier, in November Noda had met Hu on the sidelines of an Asian-Pacific regional meeting in Hawaii.

Marking the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between their countries, in 2012 both Japan and China are keen to work towards building closer cooperation.

To realize this objective, officials from both countries Sunday signed memorandums of understanding on youth exchanges and setting up an investment fund for promoting clean energy and environmental protection.

Politcs Plus: GOP,you might have a Ron Paul problem

?

GOP,you might have a Ron Paul problem

Image

The Republican Party, Fox News, and Karl Rove, will throw everything but the kitchen sink at Ron Paul, as they have if the congressman wins Iowa. As things stand now, a Ron Paul win in Iowa would neutralize Newt Gingrich thereby helping Mitt Romney, who is leading in New Hampshire. That's conventional wisdom, but this race is anything but that. The establishment Republicans do not want Ron Paul to gain any momentum or for him to upset the apple cart. The establishment GOP wants the race to be between Newt Gingrich and Mitt Romney. The Democrats can play a little mischief by voting for Ron Paul in the Iowa Caucus and New Hampshire Primary.

Iowa is not known as a bellwether state because the winner of that state's caucus hardly ever gets the nomination. South Carolina has been known as the state that sorts it all out for Republicans. The Iowa Caucus is still important because it's the first state to vote, and the winner gets the momentum and cash donations going into New Hampshire; and some candidates will drop out if they don't meet their expectations or have the necessary funds to continue. Ron Paul should win the Iowa Caucus; afterall he set up camp in that state a long time ago, and he has a large staff there. Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich have hardly stepped into that state. Newt Gingrich lost his lead in Iowa due to the daily negative ads by Romney and Paul. According to the pollsters, Gingrich's points were divided amongst Bachmann, Perry and Santorum. Today's money to win Iowa is on Ron Paul but everyone is still in the ball game meaning that second, third and forth place have some meaning.

Ron Paul has been a thorn in the GOP's side for a long time, but he knows America will never elect a Libertarian, so he picked the GOP as a marriage of convenience. Ron Paul's nonintervention or isolationist views are not in line with the Republican Party. Ron Paul's stance on Iran getting a nuclear weapon is not a popular position in either party or the majority of our citizens. Most Americans are with Ron Paul on Iraq and Afghanistan, but they don't agree that we should ignore the obvious threats around us. Last night I heard John McCain's old campaign manager, Steve Schmidt, say that Ron Paul's views on Iran scare the GOP because Obama will come into the debates with an upper hand on foreign policy, so saying it's OK for Iran to have a nuclear weapon will not sit well with the undecided.

Karl Rove and the others who are considered part of the establishment GOP are looking ahead past this election and Ron Paul or the Tea Party are not part of the plans. Despite a terrible economy, the GOP establishment thinks that only Mitt Romney (even though they don't like him or trust him) has a chance to beat President Obama....Don't get me wrong the Democrats really want to win, but the Republicans need to win.

It's a good chance that the economy will improve by 2014, and if the healthcare gets by the Supreme Court, all the troops will be out of Afghanistan, and if things get back to normal; the next democratic nominee like a Governor Cuomo of New York, will stand an excellent chance against the best Republicans throw at them.

If the Republican candidate fails against Obama; it will throw the Republican Party into a tailspin; tea party vs. establishment. There's the reason they don't want Ron Party to run in a third party, and they will do everything to try to keep him in the GOP. The most effective third-party candidate, Ross Perot, got ~20% of the Vote elevating Bill Clinton to the presidency. This election will be tight, knowing that, will Ron Paul want to leave politics knowing he helped President Obama win a second term? Democrats still haven't forgotten Ralph Nader for Al Gore's loss.

If President Obama wins, he would most likely have presidential coattails helping to regain the house and maintaining the Senate. The next president would likely appoint two replacement Supreme Court judges and set the course for the years to come.

I think the race is still unpredictable but it just gives us something to discuss. I still think it will probably be Romney v Obama without a brokered convention because Romney will have the necessary delegates come convention time, August, 27, 2012 in Tampa, Florida. I?m pretty sure we will have third party candidates as usual but they will not influence the election. What do I know and I?ve been wrong before; I?m just an outside observer having fun.

This is my last blog until after Christmas,so Merry Christmas,Happy Hanukkah and Happy Holidays to all.

'Anonymous' hackers target US security think tank

(AP) ? The loose-knit hacking movement "Anonymous" claimed Sunday to have stolen thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information belonging to clients of U.S.-based security think tank Stratfor. One hacker said the goal was to pilfer funds from individuals' accounts to give away as Christmas donations, and some victims confirmed unauthorized transactions linked to their credit cards.

Anonymous boasted of stealing Stratfor's confidential client list, which includes entities ranging from Apple Inc. to the U.S. Air Force to the Miami Police Department, and mining it for more than 4,000 credit card numbers, passwords and home addresses.

Austin, Texas-based Stratfor provides political, economic and military analysis to help clients reduce risk, according to a description on its YouTube page. It charges subscribers for its reports and analysis, delivered through the web, emails and videos. The company's main website was down, with a banner saying the "site is currently undergoing maintenance."

Proprietary information about the companies and government agencies that subscribe to Stratfor's newsletters did not appear to be at any significant risk, however, with the main threat posed to individual employees who had subscribed.

"Not so private and secret anymore?" Anonymous taunted in a message on Twitter, promising that the attack on Stratfor was just the beginning of a Christmas-inspired assault on a long list of targets.

Anonymous said the client list it had already posted was a small slice of the 200 gigabytes worth of plunder it stole from Stratfor and promised more leaks. It said it was able to get the credit card details in part because Stratfor didn't bother encrypting them ? an easy-to-avoid blunder which, if true, would be a major embarrassment for any security-related company.

Fred Burton, Stratfor's vice president of intelligence, said the company had reported the intrusion to law enforcement and was working with them on the investigation.

Stratfor has protections in place meant to prevent such attacks, he said.

"But I think the hackers live in this kind of world where once they fixate on you or try to attack you it's extraordinarily difficult to defend against," Burton said.

Hours after publishing what it claimed was Stratfor's client list, Anonymous tweeted a link to encrypted files online with names, phone numbers, emails, addresses and credit card account details.

"Not as many as you expected? Worry not, fellow pirates and robin hoods. These are just the 'A's," read a message posted online that encouraged readers to download a file of the hacked information.

The attack is "just another in a massive string of breaches we've seen this year and in years past," said Josh Shaul, chief technology officer of Application Security Inc., a New York-based provider of database security software.

Still, companies that shared secret information with Stratfor in order to obtain threat assessments might worry that the information is among the 200 gigabytes of data that Anonymous claims to have stolen, he said.

"If an attacker is walking away with that much email, there might be some very juicy bits of information that they have," Shaul said.

Lt. Col. John Dorrian, public affairs officer for the Air Force, said that "for obvious reasons" the Air Force doesn't discuss specific vulnerabilities, threats or responses to them.

"The Air Force will continue to monitor the situation and, as always, take appropriate action as necessary to protect Air Force networks and information," he said in an email.

Miami Police Department spokesman Sgt. Freddie Cruz Jr. said that he could not confirm that the agency was a client of Stratfor, and he said he had not received any information about a security breach involving the police department.

Anonymous also linked to images online that it suggested were receipts for charitable donations made by the group manipulating the credit card data it stole.

"Thank you! Defense Intelligence Agency," read the text above one image that appeared to show a transaction summary indicating that an agency employee's information was used to donate $250 to a non-profit.

One receipt ? to the American Red Cross ? had Allen Barr's name on it.

Barr, of Austin, Texas, recently retired from the Texas Department of Banking and said he discovered last Friday that a total of $700 had been spent from his account. Barr, who has spent more than a decade dealing with cybercrime at banks, said five transactions were made in total.

"It was all charities, the Red Cross, CARE, Save the Children. So when the credit card company called my wife she wasn't sure whether I was just donating," said Barr, who wasn't aware until a reporter with the AP called that his information had been compromised when Stratfor's computers were hacked.

"It made me feel terrible. It made my wife feel terrible. We had to close the account."

Wishing everyone a "Merry LulzXMas" ? a nod to its spinoff hacking group Lulz Security ? Anonymous also posted a link on Twitter to a site containing the email, phone number and credit number of a U.S. Homeland Security employee.

The employee, Cody Sultenfuss, said he had no warning before his details were posted.

"They took money I did not have," he told The Associated Press in a series of emails, which did not specify the amount taken. "I think 'Why me?' I am not rich."

But the breach doesn't necessarily pose a risk to owners of the credit cards. A card user who suspects fraudulent activity on his or her card can contact the credit card company to dispute the charge.

Stratfor said in an email to members, signed by Stratfor Chief Executive George Friedman and passed on to AP by subscribers, that it had hired a "leading identity theft protection and monitoring service" on behalf of the Stratfor members affected by the attack. The company said it will send another email on services for affected members by Wednesday.

Stratfor acknowledged that an "unauthorized party" had revealed personal information and credit card data of some of its members.

The company had sent another email to subscribers earlier in the day saying it had suspended its servers and email after learning that its website had been hacked.

One member of the hacking group, who uses the handle AnonymousAbu on Twitter, claimed that more than 90,000 credit cards from law enforcement, the intelligence community and journalists ? "corporate/exec accounts of people like Fox" News ? had been hacked and used to "steal a million dollars" and make donations.

It was impossible to verify where credit card details were used. Fox News was not on the excerpted list of Stratfor members posted online, but other media organizations including MSNBC and Al-Jazeera English appeared in the file.

Anonymous warned it has "enough targets lined up to extend the fun fun fun of LulzXmas through the entire next week."

The group has previously claimed responsibility for attacks on credit card companies Visa Inc. and MasterCard Inc., eBay Inc.'s PayPal, as well as other groups in the music industry and the Church of Scientology.

Egypt protesters accuse military

Women protesters call for the head of the military ruling council to go at Tahrir Square in Cairo (? AP)

Women protesters call for the head of the military ruling council to go at Tahrir Square in Cairo (AP)

Several thousand Egyptians have rallied in Cairo's central Tahrir Square to denounce violence against protesters.

They have been especially outraged by images of women protesters dragged by their hair, beaten and kicked by troops.

The rally marked a week after deadly clashes erupted near the landmark between protesters and the military, which took power after president Hosni Mubarak was ousted in a popular uprising in February. Seventeen protesters were killed over the past week.

Last week's violence erupted when military forces guarding the Cabinet building near the square tried to forcibly disperse a three-week-old sit-in demanding that the ruling generals hand over power to a civilian authority.

Both sides threw firebombs during the clashes and several buildings were burned. A research centre set up by Napoleon Bonaparte during France's invasion in the late 18th century was badly damaged.

At least 100 people have been killed in such confrontations and sectarian violence since the military took power.

The latest protest, named Regaining honour and defending the revolution, was backed by more than two dozen groups, among them newly formed political parties born out of the uprising.

An unidentified cleric giving the Friday sermon in Tahrir Square blamed the military for divisions and called on the generals to give up power as the only solution to ending "dictatorship". After the prayers, worshippers began a march to Tahrir Square to join the rally.

Egypt's powerful Muslim Brotherhood stayed away from the demonstration. The Brotherhood is so far the biggest winner in Egypt's parliamentary elections and has distanced itself from the protesters' demand for an immediate handover of power. The military's timetable is to transfer power after a new president is elected by the end of June 2012.

A competing rally of several hundred people gathered in support of the military in another part of Cairo. They believe an end to the demonstrations will restore stability, attract tourists and boost the country's sagging economy.

U.N. assembly holds "minute" of silence for Kim Jong-il (Reuters)

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) ? The U.N. General Assembly granted a request from North Korea and held a few moments of silence on Thursday for Kim Jong-il, the country's former leader who died on Saturday, though Western delegations boycotted it.

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the 193-nation assembly, called for a "minute of silence" before the start of a routine meeting at 3:00 p.m. EST in the half-empty U.N. General Assembly hall.

"It is my sad duty to pay tribute to the memory of the late Kim Jong-il, Secretary-General of the Workers Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, who passed away on Saturday, December 17," he said.

The minute of silence lasted for 25 seconds before Nasser proceeded with the scheduled meeting. The United States, European Union member states and Japan were among the countries that boycotted the tribute to Kim Jong-il.

North Korea's U.N. mission made a similar request to the Security Council, but Western diplomats said it was rejected.

"We didn't think it would be appropriate," a diplomat told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Several Western diplomats said Pyongyang's request for Kim to be honored was highly unusual. They voiced surprise that Nassir had granted it and added that their delegations would most likely boycott the moment of silence in the assembly.

Speaking at a news conference, Nasser cited "protocol" as the reason for agreeing to the request from North Korea, a full U.N. member. One diplomat said the reason for granting the request was probably because Kim was an acting head of state.

Pyongyang is under Security Council sanctions due to Kim Jong-il's nuclear weapons program, which Western officials say ate up huge sums of money that could have been used to help feed North Korea's starving population.

An official at the Czech Republic's U.N. mission said the Czechs did not request a similar moment of silence for Vaclav Havel, the playwright-turned-dissident who died on Sunday.

Boise State Researchers Selected for NASA's Microgravity University

Boise State University students and faculty are gearing up for a research project that is out of this world.

For the fourth straight year, a Boise State research team has been accepted into NASA?s competitive Microgravity University program.

Also known as the Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program, Microgravity University 2012 challenges undergraduate students to design, fabricate, fly and evaluate a reduced gravity experiment that ultimately contributes to NASA?s mission to advance human exploration, use and development of space. Boise State joins 13 other student teams, including those from MIT, Yale and Purdue.

The students will conduct their experiment June 8-16 during Flight Week at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. The experience during Flight Week includes hands-on experimental research and interaction with some of the world?s top technical minds at NASA. The students also will experience weightlessness when they test their experiment onboard the ?Weightless Wonder.? The aircraft flies extreme parabolic maneuvers over the Gulf of Mexico, simulating hypergravity and microgravity from two times the force on Earth to what someone would feel walking on the moon and floating in space.

With nearly all new members, Boise State?s team will build upon last year?s study that looked at cellular mechanisms associated with bone density loss suffered by astronauts who endure long periods of weightlessness. That study found a direct correlation between changes in gravity and changes in calcium concentrations in a certain type of bone cells. This year?s team will validate and quantify those results by increasing the sample size from five to 96. They are designing and building a new apparatus with a lens and charge-coupled device-based system that will monitor the entire sample set simultaneously, rather than one by one. This year?s team also will expand the research by including an additional type of bone cells in their experiment.

?Our students continue to shine for Boise State as this program helps the university evolve as a metropolitan research university of distinction,? said Barbara Morgan, distinguished educator in residence and former NASA astronaut. ?If we can understand what is happening in microgravity to cause bone loss, maybe we can help people all over the world. These are undergraduates doing graduate-level research.?

The research team represents several departments in the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering, and for the first time includes a student pursuing a degree in secondary education. The team will visit local school districts to engage K-12 students in a series of lessons on life sciences, engineering and the excitement of getting to experience weightlessness.

?This project is truly interdisciplinary and addresses a real world problem. It?s a biology project, it?s an education project and it?s an engineering project. No one person can do this project without the help of other team members,? said David Connolly, a junior mechanical engineering major who is leading the team. ?Last year, we couldn?t do as much as we had hoped. So this year we decided to expand the experiment and validate what we saw was really happening. It?s very exciting.?

Working with faculty advisers Elisa Barney Smith, Alark Joshi, Julia Oxford, Robert Hay, Sara Haight and Morgan along with research assistant Benjamin Davis, the team will work through the winter and spring to design, build and test their experiment in preparation for Flight Week in June. The students also will be writing grant proposals to help with equipment and travel costs.

Participating students include: Jason Archer, Matthew Dolan, and Marie Tharp (electrical & computer engineering); Eugene Castro and David Connolly (mechanical engineering); Lindsey Catlin (biology); Reilly Clark (applied mathematics/biology); and Audra Phelps (biology/secondary education).

American jailed for aiding Peru guerrillas returns

Paroled American Lori Berenson, who stirred international controversy when she was convicted of aiding Peruvian guerrillas, arrived in the United States on Tuesday morning for her first visit home since Peruvian authorities arrested her in 1995.

Berenson's plane touched down at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey around 7:35 a.m. The 42-year-old was greeted by two customs officers who escorted her to somewhere other than the usual passport checking area.

Berenson's mother, Rhoda Berenson, was waiting expectantly for her daughter in the international arrivals area of the airport.

"We are looking forward to the first holiday at home in a long, long time and many relatives who haven't met Salvador are excited to see him," she said, speaking of her 2-year-old grandson. "This is not a political time; this is a time for family, friends and holidays."

She said said they were heading to New York for the holidays.

Lori Berenson boarded a Continental Airlines flight at Lima's main airport late Monday under intense media scrutiny, as many in Peru wonder whether she will return to the country by the court-ordered deadline of Jan. 11.

Wearing a black turtleneck, black jeans and designer eyeglasses, Berenson told an Associated Press reporter while waiting for her flight that she intended to return to Peru. Berenson was accompanied by a U.S. Embassy employee.

"I just hope we don't get caught in a snow storm," she said, joking that such an occurrence in the U.S. would delay her return.

Delay with departure
Berenson's departure capped three days of confusion after Peruvian authorities had prevented her from boarding a flight to New York on Friday despite a court approval allowing her to leave.

The authorities said Berenson, who had served 15 years on an accomplice to terrorism conviction before her parole last year, lacked an additional document.

Peruvian migration officials finally gave Berenson another document Monday clearing her to leave the country with her son to spend the holidays with her family in New York City.

Her father, Mark Berenson, said Monday that he was anxious to see her return.

"I'm just glad that they finally resolved the thing," he told the AP by phone from New York.

Lori Berenson admitted helping the Tupac Amaru rebel group rent a safe house where authorities seized a cache of weapons after a shootout with the rebels. She insists she didn't know guns were stored there and says she never joined the group.

In 1996, a military court of hooded judges convicted Berenson of treason and sentenced her to life in prison. After U.S. pressure, she was retried by a civilian court.

Mark Berenson said he went to sleep Friday night expecting to pick up his daughter and 2-year-old grandson, Salvador Apari, the following morning.

Instead, he was awakened by news that she had been blocked from returning and spent the rest of the night angry and unable to sleep.

It's not clear whether Berenson's delayed exit amounted to government harassment or whether she simply got caught between competing bureaucracies.

Deeply scared
The court ruled that Berenson was not a flight risk. Her father told the AP that his daughter has every intention of returning to Peru.

By law, she must remain in Peru until her full sentence lapses unless President Ollanta Humala decides to commute it.

State anti-terrorism attorney Julio Galindo said he filed an appeal on Friday seeking to nullify the court ruling that approved Berenson's New York trip. He opposed Lori Berenson's parole from the start, and succeeded last year in having her returned to prison on a technicality for 2 1/2 months until a court ordered her freed in November.

Peru remains deeply scarred from its 1980-2000 conflict, which claimed some 70,000 lives.

Its gaping inequalities drew the young Berenson to Peru from El Salvador, where she had worked for the country's top rebel commander during negotiations that led to a 1992 peace accord.

Tupac Amaru was a lesser player in Peru's conflict and Berenson sought it out, she told the AP in an interview last year, because it was similar to other revolutionary movements in Latin America.

The group never set off car bombs or engaged in the merciless slaughter of thousands as Shining Path rebels did, but it did engage in kidnappings and selective killings.

In the 1980s, it was known for hijacking grocery trucks and distributing food to the poor.

The group most famously raided the Japanese embassy in Peru in 1996 during a party and held 72 hostages for more than four months. A government raid killed all the rebel hostage takers.

Berenson was arrested leaving Peru's Congress and accused of helping plan its armed takeover, which never happened.

She was initially unrepentant, but harsh prison life softened her. She was praised as a model prisoner in the report that supported her parole.

Some Peruvians still consider her a terrorist. She had been insulted in the street, and news media have repeatedly hounded and mobbed her.

(AP) ? Fifth-grader Jolie Leach says she "was gonna explode" with excitement when Justin Bieber performed a concert at her Las Vegas school, and vowed she'd never wash her hand after he gave her a high-five.

Leach was one of hundreds who showed clear symptoms of Bieber fever after the 17-year-old teen pop sensation staged a private show Friday at low-income Whitney Elementary School. The concert was filmed for an episode of "The Ellen Degeneres Show" and came two months after Bieber promised the school's 650 students a $100,000 donation.

"He really came for us. I'm so glad that he really came for us," said fourth-grader Kynedi Harris, holding a fluffy white stuffed dog picked from a truckload of toys Bieber distributed at his show.

Tucked in a downtrodden neighborhood on the east side of Las Vegas, Whitney Elementary has garnered publicity, including a September segment on Degeneres' show, for providing needy students' families with food, clothes, money for utility bills ? and just about everything in between.

Principal Sherrie Gahn said more than 85 percent of the school's 600-plus students receive free or reduced-price lunch. The school also has one of the highest homeless student populations in the Clark County School District.

Gahn, who said she used to see students pocketing ketchup packets from the cafeteria in hopes of having dinner at night, told "The Ellen Degeneres Show" she made a pact with families after she arrived about eight years ago.

"I'll pay your electrical bill, your utilities, I'll give you food or clothes, whatever you need, as long as you give me your child and then help raise that child as a person of character," she said.

Families at the school told the show Gahn has stayed true to her promise. One girl said Gahn provided her with a bed. A mother said the principal bought her son glasses. Another mother said the school provided her children with Christmas presents when she planned to skip the gift-giving.

Gahn said most of the donations come from individuals or businesses, and she said the show has brought hundreds of thousands of dollars in donations and an outpouring of support from across the country. The school also posts a "wish list" on its website, asking for granola bars, pop-top cans of soup and other non-perishable foods that homeless students can eat for dinner or over the weekend.

Bieber's gift matches a $100,000 donation from Target that was announced on the September TV special about the school. Most of the money will be used to continue basic support ? such as rent assistance ? to keep families off the street and children coming to class.

"My biggest motivator for the kids and the thought and the hope that they don't have to live in this existence when they grow up ? that they break the cycle," Gahn said.

Inside the closed event, Gahn said Bieber toured the campus and told students the story of his family's own financial struggles, including visits to a food bank when he was young. He performed songs from his Christmas album, "Under the Mistletoe," and invited the crowd to dance along to his hit "Baby."

Outside, dozens of squealing high school girls with camera phones jockeyed for a glimpse of the star as he was rushed into the building. Brittany Ellis, 14, had pulled out a scrap of paper just in time for a mobbed Bieber to autograph, and was showing her friends an indecipherable pencil scrawl.

Another girl, 17-year-old Kiersten Umberger, said she nearly cried when she saw Bieber.

"It was the best moment of my life," she said.

Teens from the neighborhood say the worn area is quiet, and certainly not the typical Vegas haunt for celebrities.

But parents and school officials said they were as grateful for the gifts from Bieber and Degeneres as the children were starstruck.

"In a world where these kids live in that things are not always their own or they're taken away," Gahn said, "they gave them memories that no one can ever take."

Fed has no plans to help Europe, Dudley says (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? Europe's financial crisis poses a threat to U.S. banks and the economy but it is up to the continent's leaders -- not the Federal Reserve -- to find a resolution, a top official at the central bank said on Friday.

New York Federal Reserve Bank President William Dudley defended the Fed's decision to lower the cost of dollar funds for overseas banks stressed by Europe's debt crisis as an important step to safeguard the U.S. economy, but he told lawmakers no further intervention was planned.

"I don't anticipate, even if the crisis in Europe were to worsen, further steps on the part of the Federal Reserve at this time," Dudley, a former Goldman Sachs partner, told a U.S. House of Representatives subcommittee.

Both Dudley and senior U.S. Treasury official Mark Sobel told the panel the euro zone's festering debt crisis posed a big risk to the U.S. economy, and that the United States had an interest in seeing it put to rest.

Financial markets remain on edge about Europe's ability to put a floor under a bond market selloff that is pushing borrowing costs for countries such as Italy and Spain toward unsustainable levels.

Dudley said U.S. financial institutions were in good shape to withstand any blows from Europe and had little direct exposure to the European countries hardest-hit by the crisis.

However, he warned that their vulnerability was greater when countries such as France and Germany, as well as the European banking system, were taken into account.

"This means that if the crisis were to broaden further and intensify, this could put greater pressure on U.S. banks' capital and liquidity buffers," potentially choking off credit for U.S. households and businesses, Dudley said.

When pressed, Dudley said he could not rule out the possibility that the U.S. central bank might be willing to accept European debt as collateral for emergency loans to U.S. banks.

"I wouldn't necessarily rule it out, if the collateral is good collateral and is appropriately haircutted," he said, referring to the discount that borrowers must accept on collateral for emergency loans.

NO MORE MONEY FOR IMF

Sobel, the U.S. Treasury's deputy assistant secretary for international affairs, said Europe's debt crisis had deepened as he made a pitch for continued U.S. involvement through the International Monetary Fund.

Some Republican lawmakers have pushed to rescind a $100 billion U.S. credit line for the IMF approved in 2009, warning that U.S. taxpayer money could be put at risk. Democrats, however, have been successful in beating back that proposal.

While the IMF can play a role in easing the crisis, it "cannot substitute for a strong and credible European firewall and response," Sobel said.

He told lawmakers that President Barack Obama and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner were "actively engaged" with European counterparts to help them deal with the crisis, but made clear Washington had no intention of pumping more money into the IMF.

In late November, the Fed collaborated with other central banks to prevent a global credit crunch stemming from the turmoil in Europe by lowering the cost of existing dollar swap lines. The arrangements permit the Fed to provide dollars to the European Central Bank and four other central banks in exchange for local currencies.

Like the funds for the IMF, the swap facilities have drawn criticism from U.S. lawmakers who say they could hand U.S. taxpayers the bill for a European financial bailout.

Steven Kamin, the head of the Fed's international finance division, tried to address those concerns in his testimony to the panel, arguing the swaps were safe for the Fed and U.S. taxpayers, and had already had a beneficial effect on dollar funding markets.

Putin hints at government return by ex-FinMin Kudrin (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, bidding to return to the Kremlin, said on Thursday that ex-Finance Minister Alexei Kudrin could have a future role in government despite their differences over this month's parliamentary election.

"Such people were needed and will be needed in past and future governments," Putin told an annual televised call-in show in response to a question on Kudrin's political future.

Kudrin quit in September after 11 years in the job, directly after Putin announced his plan to seek a third term as president. At the time, he criticized a major increase in defense spending as a threat to the stability of state finances.

Investors would welcome a return to government by Kudrin, a fiscal hawk who restored state finances to health after Russia's domestic debt default of 1998, running fiscal surpluses and building the world's third-largest foreign exchange reserves.

"Kudrin bridges a gap in that he is a proven technocrat and very close to Putin -- he is respected in government and by investors," said Roland Nash, chief investment strategist at Moscow hedge fund Verno Capital.

"It would be surprising if he did not come back to government."

CRITICAL STANCE

Kudrin has, however, emerged as a critic of the conduct of the December 4 election and distanced himself from both Putin and the policy agenda of the ruling United Russia party that saw its parliamentary majority cut in the vote.

Speaking on Thursday, Kudrin strengthened his criticism of the election in which, the opposition alleges, United Russia's vote was inflated by ballot stuffing, multiple voting and doctoring of election lists.

"I myself support honest elections," Kudrin said. "The elections just held took place with major violations and we have not yet heard an adequate answer from those responsible, and in general from the powers that be."

He also took aim at disparaging comments by Putin during the call-in in which the premier said he had mistaken the white ribbons worn by protesters for condoms and said students had been paid to turn out.

"I don't agree with this attitude towards the protesters ... there is no need to provoke them," Kudrin told reporters.

LIBERAL PROJECT

Rather than publicly setting his sights on a return to government, Kudrin has said he could envisage taking a leading role in a future liberal party that could fill a political void left by the parliamentary election.

No liberal party won representation in Russia's lower house, with the liberal Right Cause party flopping after its billionaire leader, Mikhail Prokhorov, was ousted after a clash with the Kremlin. Prokhorov has declared his candidacy for the March 4 presidential vote but remains a rank outsider.

Putin, who said he had meet Kudrin this week, acknowledged that the two did not agree on everything but said their differences were not "cardinal."

"Alexei Leonidovich Kudrin has not left my team. We are old comrades, he's my friend," Putin said. "He did a lot for the country. I'm proud that this man worked in my government."

There has been speculation that Kudrin could become prime minister should Putin, as appears likely, be elected and should outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev not be appointed to the role.

"Kudrin is very close to Putin and the strength of his expression -- that Kudrin had never left his team -- was notable," said Tom Mundy, chief strategist at Otkritie, a Moscow brokerage.

"There is clearly space for Kudrin in the next cabinet. This will be welcomed by the market as he is a very respected politician."

A galaxy blooming with new stars

Thursday, December 15, 2011

The VLT Survey Telescope (VST) has captured the beauty of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 253. The new portrait is probably the most detailed wide-field view of this object and its surroundings ever taken. It demonstrates that the VST, the newest telescope at ESO's Paranal Observatory, provides broad views of the sky while also offering impressive image sharpness.

NGC 253 gleams about eleven and a half million light-years away in the southern constellation of Sculptor. It is often just called the Sculptor Galaxy, although other descriptive names include the Silver Coin or Silver Dollar Galaxy. It is easy to get a good look at NGC 253 through binoculars as it is one of the brightest galaxies in the sky after the Milky Way's closest, big galactic neighbour, the Andromeda Galaxy.

Astronomers have noted the widespread active star formation in NGC 253 and labelled it a "starburst" galaxy [1]. The many bright clumps dotting the galaxy are stellar nurseries where hot young stars have just ignited. The radiation streaming from these giant blue-white babies makes the surrounding hydrogen gas clouds glow brightly (green in this image).

This nearby spiral galaxy was discovered by the German?British astronomer Caroline Herschel, the sister of the famed astronomer William Herschel, as she searched for comets in 1783. The Herschels would have been delighted by the crisp, richly detailed view of NGC 253 that the VST can provide.

This latest image of NGC 253 was taken during VST's science verification phase ? when the telescope's scientific performance is assessed before it enters operations. The VST data are being combined with infrared images from VISTA to identify the younger generations of stars in NGC 253. This picture is more than 12 000 pixels across and the superb sky conditions at ESO's Paranal Observatory, combined with the fine telescope optics, result in sharp star images over the entire image.

The VST is a 2.6-metre wide-field survey telescope with a one-degree field of view ? twice as broad as the full Moon [2]. The VST programme is a joint venture between the INAF?Osservatorio Astronomico di Capodimonte, Naples, Italy and ESO. The 268-megapixel camera OmegaCAM at its heart is designed to map the sky both quickly and with very fine image quality. VST is the largest telescope in the world designed to exclusively survey the sky in visible light, complementing ESO's VISTA infrared survey telescope, also located at Paranal.

Zooming into this new picture not only allows a very detailed inspection of the star-forming spiral arms of the galaxy to be made, but also reveals a very rich tapestry of much more distant galaxies far beyond NGC 253.

###

[1] Further details about NGC 253 have been revealed by ESO's Very Large Telescope (VLT) along with the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. These instruments showed in 2009 that, at its centre, NGC 253 harbours a supermassive black hole with very similar properties to those of the black hole lurking in the Milky Way's core (see ESO Press Release eso0902 http://www.eso.org/public/news/eso0902/).

[2] The image presented here has been cropped and is slightly smaller than the full VST field of view.

Glam Media moves closer to IPO, filing seen in Q2 (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Glam Media, the women's lifestyle online publishing and advertising company, is close to selecting bankers to lead an initial stock offering slated for 2012, according to people familiar with the matter.

Investment banks Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are in the running to lead Glam Media's IPO, the people said, following a selection process that involved presentations from roughly a dozen firms.

While no final decision has been made on the exact timing of Glam's IPO, people close to the situation say the company is aiming to file a prospectus in the second quarter of 2012, with a potential offering slated for the third or fourth quarter of the year.

Glam Media declined to comment.

Glam's plans to float shares to the public come as several of its online peer companies have made similar moves.

On Tuesday, Jive Software made its Wall Street debut with shares jumping 25 percent on their first day of trading. Social game company Zynga is expected to price its IPO on Thursday.

Facebook, the world's No.1 Internet social networking company, is preparing for an IPO in 2012, a source familiar with the matter previously told Reuters.

Glam, which was launched in 2005, was the 10th most visited online property in the U.S. in October, according to comScore, with roughly 85 million unique visitors.

Glam was valued at $950 million when it acquired social networking service Ning for $150 million earlier this year, sources said.

The company, which works with more than 1,000 brand advertisers including Nike and Lexus, competes with Yahoo Inc and Google Inc in the online advertising market.

Glam is moving towards an IPO as it nears the 500 shareholder threshold, a rule which would require the company to file public reports of its financial performance by 2013, according to the sources.

Glam's moves to select IPO underwriters were first reported by Bloomberg on Wednesday.

The "bake-off" process in which banks pitch their services to handle Glam's IPO wrapped up a few weeks ago and Glam is currently deciding which firms will lead the offering. Bank of America, Citi and Credit Suisse are also in the running to have a role in the offering, according to the sources.
